There may be nothing more beautiful than nature adorning your wall. Grasscloth wallpaper is typically made from materials such as arrowroot, raw jute, hemp, sisal, cork, reed, and triangle grass. The grass fibers are held together with fine thread and are usually hand-woven in Asia. This is one reason why grasscloth tends to cost more than average wallpaper.

While grasscloth is a durable wall covering, it is also prone to damage if not handled and installed properly, making it unsuitable for high-traffic areas like hallways. It does require occasional vacuuming to remove dust.

Available in a variety of colors, grasscloth’s organic appeal makes it an excellent choice for accent walls. However, it’s important to remember that grasscloth cannot be matched at the seams, so each row will appear different. Additionally, the width of grasscloth is typically wider than regular wallpaper—36” wide compared to the standard 27” and 21” widths.

The installation process for grasscloth is also different. It does not come in a prepasted option, so you will need to use a specialty adhesive like ROMAN Products GH-34, which is starch-based.

Grasscloth expands when wet, which can cause issues if installed dry on the wall. It may need to be soaked before installation, so be sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully. Avoid getting glue on the face of the wallpaper, as it will show and may be difficult to remove from the delicate grasscloth surface. The best way to prevent this is by using the “paste the wall” installation method.
